Support for Chile quake

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

A few short weeks ago, you responded with extraordinary generosity to the needs of the people of Haiti. Together, you donated nearly $300,000, along with innumerable and invaluable prayers, to help those devastated by that severe earthquake. Catholic Relief Services has put your contributions to good use.

Last Saturday, another earthquake devastated Chile, and Catholic Relief Services will once again step up to help care for the injured and homeless, comfort the grieving and orphaned, and find and bury the dead. A proportion of your generous contribution to this collection will significantly help the suffering there.

In addition to these emergency relief efforts, every day CRS supports important Catholic organizations that carry out God’s work around the world—providing refugee resettlement, HIV/AIDS and international poverty relief, legal aid for poor immigrants, and promoting global peace and justice. The theme of this year’s collection is “Give hope to Jesus in disguise.” We know that Christ is present in those who suffer. We are called to be His tender hands and heart, by responding compassionately to their needs, especially with acts of prayer and solidarity.

Here in our Diocese of Sioux City, The Catholic Relief Services Collection is scheduled for all Masses for the 4th Sunday of Lent, on March 13 and 14. This is a good opportunity for us to express our compassion and solidarity with all the poor children of God, by our continuing prayers and generosity. Please know that your generous support “gives hope to Jesus in disguise.” Please visit www.usccb.org/nationalcollections for more information about the Collection and the essential organizations funded by it.

As we continue our Lenten journey to the Cross and the Resurrection, please reflect again on the great gifts of hope and faith given to us by our most generous God and Father. None of us are worthy of these gifts, yet God loves us with infinite love, and calls us to love Him and each other. Are we doing everything we can to answer His call?

Your brother in Christ,

Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless
Bishop of Sioux City
