Heelan plans to build this fall

Leaders of the Pride Campaign of Bishop Heelan High School announced at the Heelan Auction tonight in the Sioux City Convention Center that the goal of $7.5 million in cash has been reached, enabling the school to break ground in fall.

The planned Phase I construction of the new high school will include a performing arts theater/auditorium, fine arts and general classrooms, a chapel, cafeteria and mechanical systems. The construction cost, including the land, will be $15 million. Policy of the Diocese of Sioux City requires that half of projected costs be collected before construction begins.

The announcement that Heelan will break ground this fall was made by Father Patrick Walsh, president of Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, to some 600 guests gathered at the Heelan auction. Father Walsh was flanked by campaign leaders on stage at the event − the school system’s largest fundraiser of the year.

“It is with great pride that I announce tonight that Phase I of the Pride campaign has reached our cash in hand goal of $7.5 million. We will begin building a new Bishop Heelan High School,” said Father Walsh. “I want to thank Dr. Mike and Peggy Jung, campaign chairs for spearheading this effort. I thank all of our campaign leaders, donors, volunteers, pastors and parish members. They worked tirelessly toward our goal of building a new high school to educate students in a Christ-centered environment.”

“Peggy and I have been honored to help Bishop Heelan benefit future generations,” Jung said. “A new state-of-the-art building will provide an enhanced learning environment where Christian values and Catholic faith are learned and lived.”

School officials are finalizing construction plans. The day for the formal groundbreaking event will be determined at a future date. The building is projected to be open for students
in 2014.
