Plans underway for trip to March for Life in January
Catholic Globe report
It’s October – Respect Life Month – so what better time to be planning for the upcoming March for Life this January in Washington D.C.
Karmen Bower, assistant director of religious education and family life, said Iowans for L.I.F.E is doing the logistical planning for the bus trip to Washington D.C. and the diocese is helping to spread the word about the trip.
“All are welcome! The price includes the bus transportation and hotel stay for two nights - four to a room,” explained Bower.
The trip will be held Jan. 21-25, 2012.
The cost is $375.
Deadline to sign up for the bus trip is fast approaching - Nov. 1, 2011.
Bower said they after they arrive in Washington D.C. there are many different pro-life activities available.
“The March for Life begins at noon on Jan. 23, so we bundle up and march with the hundreds of thousands of other participants. This trip includes a free day in Washington D.C. so the participants can walk around to see the different monuments and museums. The Holocaust museum is a popular destination on this day,” she said.
Several groups and individuals from the Diocese of Sioux City have been attending the March for Life for many years.
“We have several Catholic school systems and youth groups who make this a priority for their students every year,” Bower said. “With this as a foundation, we want to assist Iowans for L.I.F.E. with advertising in our diocese so that more people in our diocese are made aware of this opportunity.”
She noted that many people are able to raise enough funds to fly to Washington D.C., but she believes it is good to offer a less pricey alternative to flying. Another plus of the bus trip is the pilgrimage atmosphere with plenty of prayer that she noticed on the trip last year.
“It was wonderful to see so many people, young and old, clergy and lay people, showing solidarity in trying to bring about a culture of life,” Bower said.
Everyone is welcome to attend. Students from Catholic schools, youth groups, young adults, retired individuals and entire families have participated in this event.
