Catholic Schools Week 2012

Bishop Garrigan Schools, Algona

On Jan. 29, students will be involved in all parish Masses. An all-system Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 30 by Father Paul Eisele at St. Cecelia Church. The money collection at Mass will be for Care Team. On Feb. 2 there will be a staff breakfast at Bishop Garrigan High School.

Seton Grade School, Algona

Each day during Catholic Schools Week, the fifth and sixth graders will lead prayer. Jan. 31 will be student appreciation/gift day and everyone will wear black and gold. Partners will meet for an activity on Feb. 1 and there will be an early out at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 2 will be teacher and staff appreciation day with treats in the lounge provided by Home and School. Seton will celebrate its birthday on Feb. 3 with inflatables and free jeans day. The Feast of St. Blaise will be celebrated on Feb. 3 with the blessing of throats at 8:30 a.m.

Bishop Garrigan High School, Algona

Jan. 31 will be student appreciation/gift day and everyone will wear black and gold. There will also be a pep rally including the high school cheerleaders and danz squad. Partners will meet for an activity on Feb. 1 and there will be an early out at 1:30 p.m. On Feb. 2 there will be an education fair for the seventh and eighth graders at 6 p.m. Feb. 3 will be jeans day. The Feast of St. Blaise will be celebrated on Feb. 3 with the blessing of throats at 12:45 p.m.

Spalding Catholic School of Alton, Granville and Hospers

The week will kick off with Masses in Granville (4 p.m.) and in Hospers (5 p.m.) on Jan. 28 and in Alton (8:30 a.m.) and Granville (9 a.m.) on Jan. 29. Spalding students will lector, greet and hand out prayer cards, serve, etc. Students will give a brief statement of what they love about Spalding. At 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 29 there will be a Family Fun Day at the Alton Center with open gym, bingo and Minute to Win It activities. At 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 30 there will be a short prayer service and then staff will serve the students pancakes – kindergarten through sixth grade in the Alton cafeteria and seventh through twelfth in the Granville cafeteria. An open house with coffee and rolls will be held from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 1 in the Alton cafeteria for prospective families, businesses, supporters and volunteers. The high school students will be going to Sioux City on Feb. 1 and the seventh and eighth graders will be going to the Dordt College Rec Center. Also on this day, there will be a staff appreciation dinner held at the Sioux Golf and Country Club in Alton. Feb. 3 will be jeans and Spalding shirt day for the entire system. The kindergarten through sixth graders will go to Sioux Center in the morning for swimming.

St. John the Baptist, Bancroft

Jan. 30 will be jean day and bingo. Sport day will be Jan. 31 and the students will play Minute It to Win It games. Feb. 1 will be Business Appreciation Day and cookies/bars will be delivered to area businesses for support of Catholic schools. Dress-up Day will be Feb. 2 with Mass. Students will bring non-perishable items to Mass to donate to the food pantry. Feb. 3 will be Jean Day and the students will go bowling and have pizza.

Sacred Heart School, Boone

Jan. 30 will be Neon Day and there will be a family picnic at 11:30 a.m. in the gym. Jan. 31 will be Storybook Day and the students will dress as a character from their favorite book. Coach Ryan Sloth, an author, will visit to meet with students and read to them. Feb. 2 will be School Spirit Day and students will wear a Sacred Heart shirt or a blue and white shirt for Mass. There will be a Bingo party for the students at 2 p.m. That evening will be McTeacher’s Night at McDonald’s in Boone. The Sacred Heart School Carnival will be on Feb. 3 with the meal at 5:30 p.m. and the carnival from 6 to 8 p.m.

Kuemper Catholic Schools, Carroll

On Jan. 28 and 29 Kuemper students will participate in Masses by serving, reading and singing. A Thank You will be read after communion thanking all the parishioners for supporting Catholic education. On Jan. 30, the marketing department will send Thank You messages to individuals and businesses in the community. This will be a $1 casual dress day for all centers and the money raised will support Care Packages for Troops. Jan. 31 will be Favorite Team Day - Holy Spirit Center and St. Angela Center students may wear a t-shirt or sweatshirt of their favorite team with uniform pants. This will also Read with a Friend Day for grades kindergarten through fifth grade.Veterans from the community will be recognized during an all-school assembly at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 2 in the high school gym. St. Lawrence Center students will participate in a Cage Ball Tournament in the afternoon. An all-school Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 3 at Holy Spirit Church. Students in grade eight and eleven will prepare Care Packages for Troops after Mass. A reception recognizing Eternal Knights, priests, deacons and religious will be held in the Holy Spirit cafeteria after Mass. Bishop Walker Nickless will visit each of the buildings.
 
Danbury Catholic

On Jan. 28 and 29 there will be special speakers who will talk about Catholic education at Masses in Mapleton, Oto, Anthon and Danbury. Family and Friends Day will be Jan. 31 and Danbury Catholic family and friends are invited to join Danbury Catholic students for lunch. Feb. 1 will be Retreat Day at Danbury Catholic with St. Rose of Lima School from Denison. A special concert by Father David Hemann will be held from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m. Teacher Appreciation Day will be Feb. 2. Students will distribute Prayer Door Hangers throughout the community committing to pray for those who live there (weather permitting). Feb. 3 will be Student Appreciation Day and the students will go bowling from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ida Bowl in Ida Grove.

St. Rose of Lima, Denison

On Jan. 29 a pancake breakfast will be held in the parish center. The students will go skating on Jan. 30 at Skate Palace in Ida Grove. On Jan. 31 students will play Bingo with residents at Silver Ridge assisted living. The students will travel to Danbury on Feb. 1 for Mass and CSW activities with Danbury Catholic students. Feb. 3 will be Family Night with a dance.
 
Emmetsburg Catholic

On Jan. 29 there will be a 10:15 a.m. Mass. There will also be an Ignatius Press Catholic Book & Film Fair (All Week). The Catholic Schools Week concert will be from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. that day. Jan. 30 will be Pajama Day – shoes must be worn to school – slippers may be put on at school. Irish Day will be Jan. 31 and students will wear an Irish shirt or a green shirt. At 1 p.m. on this day students will go see Toy Story 3 (rated G) at the movie theater. Feb. 2 will be Dress Up Day with a Soup Luncheon with Bishop Walker Nickless.School T-Shirt Day will be Feb. 3 with Mass for fifth and sixth graders at noon. From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. there will be a carnival in the cafeteria to benefit the Larry Joyce family.

St. Edmond Catholic School, Fort Dodge

On Jan. 30 students will bring non-perishable food items for the parish food pantry. The Book Fair begins for preschool –8th grade from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Classes will visit the Book Fair at scheduled signup time. A Fun Night Carnival will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 31. This will also be High School Appreciation Day with bowling & movie in morning and a talent show in the afternoon led by student council. Feb. 1 will be day one of movies in auditorium for elementary students in K-2nd in the morning and middle school in the afternoon. Grades 2-5th (possibly 2-8th) will have a presentation by Sean and Stacy Martin from the diocese from 2 to 2:45 p.m. in the auditorium about “Incorruptible Saints.” Day two of movies for Elementary in grades 3-5th will be on Feb. 2. In the afternoon, the high school and middle school students will participate in Gaels Olympics (Relay Races and Catholic Trivia questions) in the gym. Msgr. Kevin McCoy will celebrate and all school Mass at 11 a.m. on Feb. 3 in the varsity gym. Dismissal for students is at noon.

St. Mary Grade School, Humboldt

On Jan. 29 a pancake breakfast will be held in the gym from 8 to 12 a.m. There will be a quiz bowl for students K-6 on Jan. 30. On Jan. 31 there is a collection for Saint Jude’s Children Research Hospital and cross crafts with buddies for care centers. Students can wear St. Mary’s shirts to school on Feb. 2. On Feb. 3, older buddies will be teaching younger buddies a Bible story.

Gehlen Catholic Schools, Le Mars

There will be a Catholic Schools Week kick off supper in the cafeteria on Jan. 29. On Jan. 30, Bishop Walker Nickless will preside over the 8:45 a.m. Liturgy in the Bob Kneip Family Gym. Jan. 31 is the deadline for the Betty Sitzmann Scholarship. There will also be a junior varsity girls and varsity boys and girls basketball games starting at 4:30 p.m. at Spalding Catholic. The Chamber of Commerce Coffee meeting will be on Feb. 1 at 9:30 a.m., and the Peter Gehlen luncheon will be at noon. On Feb. 2 there will be a family picnic with a special announcement in the Bob Kneip Family Gym at 12:40. On Feb. 3 there will be a student blessing in the gym and Dads and pancakes in the cafeteria.

Pocahontas Catholic

Catholic Schools Week will kick-off with 8:30 a.m. Mass with student-led ministries and liturgies on Jan. 29 at Resurrection Parish. On Jan. 30, a Begin the Week Well Retreat led by Mrs. Crowe will be held at 12:40 p.m. in the Spirit Center. The school will host the Amazing Star Lab with Corrine Peterson, PCCB Naturalist, on Jan. 31. A brown bag lunch with parents and afternoon movie at PCS will be the highlight of Feb. 1. Bishop Walker Nickless will be coming Pocahontas Catholic from 9 to 11 a.m. on Feb. 2 and in the afternoon various classroom activities will be held for each grade. A student Mass with adoration will be held on Feb. 3 at 8:35 a.m. with Yummy Sale and Carnival at 1:30 p.m. and cake drawing at 2:45 p.m.

St. Mary’s School, Remsen
St. Catherine-St. Mary’s Grade School

Jan. 30 will be Student Appreciation Day for transitional kindergarten through first grade with bowling in Marcus and middle schoolers going skating in Sheldon. Teacher Appreciation Day will be on Jan. 31. Students will listen to a speaker, Aaron Leusink, on respect. Team Day - “Teaming up Against Cancer”- will be held on Feb. 1 and students will gather from 1:30 to 3:20 p.m. in the gym to raise money for Gina Stukenholtz. Family Fun Night will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the gym. Student day for second through fourth grades will be on Feb. 3 and the students will go bowling in Remsen.

St. Mary’s High School, Remsen

On Jan. 29 the Catholic Schools Week breakfast will be served by grade school and high school faculty. There will be a morning prayer service on Jan. 30 in cafeteria followed by guest speaker and pancake breakfast. Feb. 1 will be Service Day with students attending Bavarian Meadows and Happy Siesta nursing homes in Remsen and Heartland nursing home in Marcus in the afternoon. There will be an evening family fun night for middle school students playing basketball vs. parents. A family picnic will be held at noon in the high school gym on Feb. 2 followed by and all school Mass at 2 p.m. Student appreciation day will be held on Feb. 3 in Sioux City. Students will take a tour of the Greek Orthodox churches, have lunch at Red Robin and go bowling at Lewis Bowl.

St. Patrick’s School, Sheldon

On Jan. 30 members of the community will be invited in for lunch. Bishop Walker Nickless and Dan Ryan, superintendent of Catholic schools for the Sioux City Diocese will be at school to visit with the students. The annual St. Pat’s Supper with the Knights of Columbus making omelets will be held that evening. Teachers and staff members will be enjoying a long lunch on Jan. 31 in the Presentation room with parents stepping in to monitor the students at lunch and during a short activity. This will be favorite book/movie character day and students will choose their favorite and dress the part. A Family Game Night will be held from 6:30 to 8 on Feb. 1. The dress up theme is Hawaiian Day. On Feb. 3 St. Patrick’s students will Reach New Heights with Faith through Service. The students will participate in a decade of the rosary after church as part of adoration. They will conclude the week with a trip to Field Crest.

Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, Sioux City
Bishop Heelan High School

On Jan. 31 an all school Mass will be celebrated at Cathedral of the Epiphany. Students will be raising money for Then Feed Just One during Catholic Schools Week. Feb. 3 will be a jeans day for the students.

Holy Cross School, Sioux City

On Jan. 28 and 29 Holy Cross School students will assist with weekend Masses at Blessed Sacrament and St. Michael’s with donuts and coffee after Masses at both churches. Bishop Walker Nickless and Dan Ryan will visit on Jan. 31. The eighth grade retreat for Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools will be held from 9:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Briar Cliff University. The kindergarten through eighth grade Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Feb. 1 at St. Michael’s Church. Spirit Day will be Feb. 2 with students wearing a Heelan top and uniform bottoms. SOS will provide ice cream sundaes for PK-8 students. Feb. 3 will be jeans day with early dismissal – Blessed Sacrament at 11:30 a.m. and St. Michael’s at noon. SOS Family Fun Night will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the Siouxland Y.

Mater Dei School

Mater Dei students will speak at weekend Masses on Jan. 28 and 29 at Nativity and Immaculate Conception. On Jan. 30 students will recognize those who serve by writing thank you notes to volunteers. Students will dress up as someone who serves (police, fireman, etc.) on Feb. 1. Preschool through eighth grade Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 2 at Nativity. Students will participate in a carnival sponsored by the sixth through eighth graders and all have lunch together. Students will dress in comfy clothes on Feb. 3 and there will a preschool through fifth grade teacher swap and Bingo. There will be a volleyball game with the sixth through eighth graders verses the teachers. There will be early dismissal – Nativity at 11:30 a.m. and Immaculate Conception at noon.

Sacred Heart School

Jan. 31 will be Sacred Heart Spirit Day and students will wear Sacred Heart colored clothing (red, white, and black) with jeans. There will be a Family Picnic from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Feb. 1. Students may wear dress up clothes, no jeans or t-shirts for Mass on Feb. 2. The annual teachers vs. 8th grade volleyball game will be held from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 3. Students may wear casual and athletic clothes this day. School is dismissed at noon. The Parent School Group Pizza Bingo Bash Night will start at 5:30 p.m.

Sacred Heart School, Spencer

Jan. 29 will be Parish Day. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. with students and alumni singing in the choir. An Omelet Breakfast sponsored by Knights of Columbus will be served from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. A Book Fair will be held all week beginning after the 10 a.m. Mass. Community Day will be Jan. 30 and students will write thank you’s to former and present priests and principals. They will aldo deliver cookies to the public schools, Lutheran School, YMCA and community services. Jan. 31 will be Student Day. Students will be able to dress down in pajamas and will go bowling. National/ Volunteer Day will be Feb. 1 and students will enjoy a picnic lunch with parents in the gym. Lunchroom and playground volunteers will be recognized. Feb. 3 will be Teacher Day and the School Board will make breakfast for teachers and staff. A carnival will be held from 6 to 9 p.m.

St. Mary’s Grade School and High School, Storm Lake

On Jan. 28 and 29, St. Mary’s students will talk about Catholic schools at each of the English and Spanish weekend Masses. Family Service Day will be from 1 to 3 p.m. in the school on Jan. 29. Families are invited to visit the different “stations” in the school to make favors and placemats for nursing home residents, those in the local hospital and soldiers. Older students will visit the students at Faith, Hope and Charity with their favors. Jan. 31 will be Community Outreach Day and thank-you gifts will be delivered by students to the organizations who support St. Mary’s School. At 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 1 the K-12 school Mass will be held with St. Mary’s High School alumni leading the music. The local media will be honored for their coverage of St. Mary’s School. The preK-4 students and their parents will be treated to a picnic lunch in the gym on Feb. 2. School will dismiss at 12:25 p.m. on Feb. 3. Staff will be treated with refreshments  at 2 p.m. to complete the celebration of Catholic Schools Week 2012.
