Nominations are currently being sought for the Bishop's Excellence in Education Award that will be presented at the 12th Annual Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Education that is slated for Oct. 19, 2008. Anyone - parent, peer, administrator, pastor or parishioner - may nominate any teacher who serves
Teachers who receive this honor are not only publicly recognized at the Bishop's Dinner, but they also receive a $1,000 monetary award from a Catholic School Foundation Endowment. Four teachers will receive this prestigious award this year. "These are teachers who represent the best parts of our Catholic schools and live their lives as role models for their students and the rest of the Catholic community," said Kevin Vickery, superintendent of Catholic schools. Nomination forms are available in every Catholic school office. The forms should also be available in all parish offices. The deadline to nominate teachers is April 25. These nominations are to be sent to the Superintendent of Schools, Office of Education, 1821 Jackson St., Sioux City, IA 51102 and should be postmarked by April 25. Once nominated, other required steps must be taken by the teacher applicant. They are to complete an application form, provide a brief resume, include a letter of nomination from the principal as well as two to four letters of nomination. The letters of nomination should highlight: the teacher's philosophy of Catholic education, innovative teaching strategies used to meet a specific curriculum goal and how parental/community involvement is incorporated into the curriculum. All entries with the information completed by the teacher applicant must be returned to the diocese by May 16.
