Catholic schools light the way to put faith into action

Jan. 24, 2008

As we begin preparations for Catholic Schools Week, we reflect on the theme, Catholic Schools Light the Way. The religious image of light is very rich. We believe that Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12), but in a wonderful way, we, also, are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

The Catholic Church has made an extraordinarily positive impact on the United States by providing an exceptional education to generations of young people. Catholic schools, from elementary schools to universities, hold an excellent reputation, and are valued for educating the whole person. One of the things that Catholic Schools do really well is to educate the whole child, in mind, body, and spirit. Catholic Schools address the spiritual needs of children and help them to know and believe that they are unique creations of God who have a divine light inside. Secure in this knowledge, graduates of Catholic Schools for generations have gone forth into the world ready to make a difference, to share their light with the world.

Catholic Schools provide both a top-notch education in human knowledge (math, English, social studies, science, the Arts, etc.) and in divine truth (teaching scripture, theology, Catholic social teachings, service, etc.). Catholic Schools light the way for those on the journey of discipleship because our schools help students, parents, faculty, and family members follow Jesus and put their faith into action.

Catholic Schools light the way to a brighter future for individuals and for society because we educate children of all faith backgrounds and help advance the whole human family, not just Catholics. Catholic Schools have helped lift countless generations out of the darkness of ignorance into the light of knowledge. Our schools have given hope to people in all segments of society. Many religious orders have as their ministry the education of disadvantaged children, so that low-income communities as well as wealthier communities benefit from a Catholic education. We can be proud of the diverse community found in most Catholic Schools as our Catholic Schools reach out to enroll minority students.

The awesome power of a Catholic education has been and continues to be key to the success and fulfillment for countless graduates. Yet the greatest gift given by Catholic schools is knowledge of our salvation.

Thank you to parents, volunteers, parishioners, staff, teachers, and administrators for your dedication and commitment to Catholic Education.

May God bless you and the lives you touch.
