CSW Schedules

The following schedule of events is a brief overview of some of the highlights and activities planned for Catholic Schools Week at schools in the Diocese of Sioux City.

Bishop Garrigan Schools, Algona

Seton Grade and Middle School

* On Monday, there will be an assembly for a mayoral visit and Mass with K-12 students will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. at St. Cecelia's. Students will receive gifts on Tuesday and will be dressing in black and gold. There will be a Peers and Partner lunch on Wednesday. The staff will be treated to breakfast at Bishop Garrigan High School on Thursday and there will be an educational fair at 6 p.m. that night. On Friday, there will be a birthday party for Seton and students may wear jeans. ? Bishop Garrigan

* High school students will also receive a gift on Tuesday. The school will host a Speech Spectacular at 6 p.m. on Jan. 30. The staff will be treated to breakfast on Jan. 31. On Friday, the high school will host a Chamber Coffee at 10 a.m. ? Spalding Catholic Elementary, Alton and Hospers

Spalding Elementary

* Students will send "Happy Catholic Schools Week" cards to area preschool children. On Tuesday, the elementary students will spend the afternoon enjoying games with their classmates as well as having no homework that day. The highlight of the week for the staff is having a duty free lunch with a special meal off campus. The traditional K-12 Mass and winter picnic will happen on Wednesday. This is a great time of fellowship and prayer honoring the gift of Catholic education. ? Spalding High School, Granville

* Tuesday, Student Appreciation Day, the 9-12 students go to Long Lines in Sioux City for activities and 7-8 will go to Cherokee to the wellness center. Wednesday is the K-12 picnic and Mass. On Thursday, Community and Staff Appreciation Day, the student council will serve coffee and rolls after Mass for the community and the staff will be treated to a lunch. Friday will be a community blood drive in the gym from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday is the Spalding Catholic Gala in Alton. ? St. John the Baptist School, Bancroft

* Crazy dress day will be held Jan. 28. On. Jan. 29 the students will wear St. John sweatshirts or T-shirts. A mini-retreat will be led by Mark Thomason on Jan. 29. Birthday party day will be Jan. 30. An all-school Mass will take place on Jan. 31. The students will go bowling and have a jean day on Feb. 1. ? Sacred Heart School, Boone

* The celebration will start at Mass on Jan. 27 with the school choir singing at 10 a.m. Sunday liturgy. A Knights of Columbus Breakfast for Tuition will be served from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. and a school open house is set for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be a light prayer service on Monday. The classes will reach out to people in the community on Tuesday and students will be allowed to dress as someone they admire in the community. Wednesday will feature the kickoff of Project Mississippi and they will pray the rosary. The highlights of Thursday include Mass and Food Pantry collection. Bingo and a carnival are highlights of Friday. ? Kuemper Catholic Grade and High School, Carroll * Catholic Schools Week kicks off in Carroll on Jan. 25 with chamber coffee in the Kuemper High School cafeteria from 8 to 9 a.m. On Jan. 28, an all-school Mass will be celebrated at 8:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church. Priest appreciation will be held after Mass. The Feast of St. Angela will be celebrated on Jan. 29. St. Angela graduates are invited to the school Mass and then coffee and juice in the library with some entertainment provided by Jeff Wicker and the choir and Kathryn Braddy's class. The St. Angela building's corner stone was laid 100 years ago. Kuemper will host kindergarten information meetings on Jan. 30 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the Holy Spirit gym. There will be activities scheduled for children who will be in kindergarten or optional kindergarten this fall and information for the parents to take home. On Jan. 31, the St. Lawrence Center with have a tournament in the afternoon with games, food and fun. All proceeds will go to Kids Against Hunger and Sister Epi in Africa. On Feb.1, seventh and eighth-graders will take part in a ski trip to Seven Oaks in Boone. Sixth-graders will visit Swan Lake in morning and the health center in the afternoon that day. While the high school students will do a partner activity in their homerooms on Feb. 1. There will also be carnival games and a dress down day with proceeds to go to Kids Against Hunger.

Danbury Catholic

* Students decorated the "Lighting the Way" grocery bags for Colbert's Grocery in Danbury in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. On Wednesday, Danbury Catholic students will join St. Rose of Lima for a Retreat Day with a focus built around Our Lady of Guadalupe. On Jan. 24, students will go bowling for PE at Ida Grove. Friday will feature an all-school Mass, celebrated by Father Andrew Sohm, a Danbury Catholic graduate. He will also talk to students about his vocation and his life's choice. Students will also wear their "Danbury Catholic: Lighting the Way" shirts to school one day. On Sunday, Feb. 3 a tentative rolls and coffee/juice reception is being planned after Mass to conclude week of celebration. ?

St. Rose of Lima School, Denison

* On Jan. 27, the week will kick off with a St. Rose Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast in the parish center. Each child will write a reason why they like St. Rose School, their candles and pictures will be hung up around the Parish Center for all to see. A visit to area nursing homes is planned for Jan. 28. Family picnic lunch will be highlight of Jan. 29. St. Rose students will join with Danbury Catholic students for a retreat on Jan. 30. They will join with Zion Lutheran School children PE games on Jan. 31. On Feb. 1, St. Rose students will see the Veggie Tales Movie, The Pirate Who Didn't Do Anything. In many of the eating establishments throughout Denison they have placed tri-folds promoting St. Rose of Lima School and student radio spots will be featured on KDSN FM 107.1. ? Emmetsburg Catholic, Emmetsburg

* Weekend Masses will kick off the week of celebration and on Jan. 27, the students will present a 2 p.m. concert for Catholic Schools Week. Students will be allowed to wear hats and shades on Jan. 29. All students will participate in a retreat day on Jan. 30. That day is also Irish Day and students will wear Emmetsburg Catholic shirts or green and gold. Clash Day is planned for Jan. 31. Students will wear mismatched clothing. Sport Spirit Day is planned for Feb. 1. Students can dress up featuring their favorite sports team. They plan to go roller skating or bowling. ? St. Edmond Catholic School, Fort Dodge

St. Edmond Grade School

* On Monday, Jan. 28, they will make cards for seminarians and thank you cards to parents and the school support staff. An open house and book fair are planned for Jan. 29 after school. A teacher luncheon is planned for Jan. 30 at Tea Thyme. Students and teachers may wear their Gael shirts. Movie day will be held on Thursday by K-5. Admission to movie will be a non-perishable item that will be given to the Salvation Army. On Friday, an all-school Mass will be held at 11:45 a.m. There will also be a collection for the Domestic and Sexual Assault Outreach Center. Prayer partner activities are planned for sometime during the week. ? St. Edmond Middle and High School

Students will watch the movie "Charting the Course" on Tuesday. This movie is about dealing with some of the common issues teens are faced with today. Middle school students will be able to play with inflatable games and high school student will participate and be able to attend a talent show. On Wednesday, high school students will play with inflatable games and middle School Students will watch movie. It will be a dress down day for staff. Lunch will be catered for MS/HS staff. Kitchen Staff will receive gift certificate to go out to eat at another time. The all-school Mass is set for Friday. Lunch will be catered for all staff and awards will be given out for years of service.

St. Mary School, Humboldt

* Catholic Schools Week will kick off at St. Mary School in Humboldt on Jan. 27 with a pancake breakfast. Light the Way in Our Nation will be the theme of Jan. 28 and the students will wear red, white and blue to school. They will also have a prayer service for peace and sing patriotic songs. Light the Way in Our Community will be the theme of Jan. 29 and the students will decorate placemats for nursing homes and make thank you cards for the police department, fire department and EMTs. Light the Way in Our Faculty and Staff will be the theme of Jan. 30 and the students will wear their class color for a rainbow picture. The students will also make thank you cards for parents. On Jan. 31 the theme will be Light the Way in Our Vocations and Father Schreiber and Sister Louise will speak to the students about vocations. Light the Way in Our Students will be the theme of Feb. 1. The students will dress as their hero and discuss in each classroom why it is important to have role models. ? Gehlen Catholic Grade and High School, Le Mars

* On Monday, Jan. 28 there will be a CSW liturgy in the gym at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday will feature TEAM lunch for Faculty/Staff, and it is casual dress for Faculty/Staff. A Chamber of Commerce Coffee in the Library will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Jan. 30 and also that day there will be a Peter Gehlen Society and Adopt-a-Room Donors Luncheon. The 10th annual CSW family picnic will be held Jan. 31 at noon. It will be Cooks' Day Off with complimentary fruits and vegetable through the Fruits & Vegetables Grant. Students will receive a special blessing on Feb. 1. There will be storytelling for PK to sixth-graders by Margie Reitsma, funded through the Iowa Arts Council. For students in 7-12, they will go bowling and ice skating. It's also Jeans Day for all students. ? Pocahontas Catholic

* A Catholic Schools Mass will be held for second through fifth grade at 5 p.m. Jan. 26 at Resurrection Parish. Community day will be held Jan. 28 and the students will make placemats for the Community Center and Pizza Ranch. On Jan. 29 teachers will enjoy an appreciation lunch at 11:30 a.m. and parents will do lunch duty. The students will have a brown bag lunch with parents on Jan. 30 as well as attend a movie at the Rialto. On Feb. 1 an all-school Mass will be held. A carnival and yummy sale will also be held Feb. 1 with proceeds going to missions. - St. Mary's School, Remsen

* On Jan. 27 a breakfast will be held from 8 a.m. to noon for Oscar Cash in the high school cafeteria. There will be an opening prayer service at 8:20 a.m. on Jan. 28 followed by a guest speaker. On Jan. 29 there will be a Service Day presentation with Dr. Marlin Lode. There will be a faculty and staff appreciation dinner on Jan. 30 given by the Christian Leadership Team. Family Appreciation Day is on Jan. 31 and an all-school picnic will be held at 12:30 p.m. followed by Mass at 2 p.m. Academic, Student Appreciation Day will be Feb. 1 ? St. Patrick School, Sheldon

* The week will kick off with 5:30 p.m. Mass on Jan. 26 at St. Patrick Church as well as 8:30 a.m. Mass on Jan. 27 at St. Mary's in Ashton. On Jan. 28 the school will celebrate Catholic Schools Light the Way: In our Parish. They will meet in their peer groups for an activity to coincide with the theme as well as sit with their peer groups at lunch. Catholic Schools Light the Way: In our Nation and World will be the theme for Jan. 29 and the students will say prayers focusing on peace in all nations and for prosperity in the third world countries. This will also be "Twins Day." On Jan. 30 the theme will be Catholic Schools Light the Way: In our Teachers and the teachers will share a special lunch together as well as have a casual day. Catholic Schools Light the Way: In our Community will be Jan. 31 and business people and leaders from Ashton and Sheldon will be invited to lunch with the students. On Feb. 1 the theme will be Catholic Schools Light the Way: In our Students and a bingo party is planned in the afternoon along with a treat to show each of the students how much each one is appreciated. 

Bishop Heelan High School, Sioux City

* A canned drive for Center for Siouxland will be done throughout the week culminating in collection on Feb. 1. On Jan. 27, LIFE Core will paint the fourth floor windows facing Douglas with Catholic Schools Light the Way. The students will start the week off on Jan. 28 by wearing all white to Light the Way. The Gospel focus for Jan. 28 will be Mark 3:22-30 A House Divided Cannot Stand. We are all Community and one body in Christ. On Jan. 29 Bishop R. Walker Nickless will preside at Mass at 8:25 a.m. in Cathedral of the Epiphany. There will be and eighth grade retreat at 10:30 a.m. at Epiphany Center. Gospel focus: Mark 3:31-35 Whoever does the will of God is my family. The LIFE core will present a skit, How we Light the Way, during an assembly on Jan. 30. Gospel Focus: Mark 4:1-20 Parable of the sower. The Crusader Olympics Assembly will take place from 2:44 to 3:18 p.m. in gym on Jan. 31. There will be a Big Cookie Raffle in cafeteria during lunch with the proceeds going to the Sister Water Project for Franciscans Mission. Gospel focus: Mark 4:21-25 Put the lamp on the stand to light the whole house. On Feb. 1 there will be early dismissal and the LIFE Core will take the cans collected to the Center for Siouxland. Gospel focus: Mark 4:26-34 The seed grows of its own accord and is a mystery. ? Holy Cross School, Sioux City

* On Jan. 26 and 27 the theme will be Light the Way in our parish, BHCS families will participate in all of the liturgies at St. Michael's and Blessed Sacrament Parishes. The theme on Jan. 28 will be Light the Way in our community and the students will participate in various forms of service. The students may wear their gold service day T-shirt with school uniform pants. The theme for Jan. 29 will be Catholic Schools: Light the Way in our students and the eighth graders will participate in a BHCS retreat at Heelan. Students, faculty and staff may wear jeans and BHCS apparel for Spirit Day and there will be a talent show as well from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. On Jan. 30 students will attend Mass at St. Michael Church as well as a Rollerama Skating Party from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Catholic Schools: Light the Way in our vocations will be the theme for Jan. 31. The students will have early dismissal on Feb. 1 and the day's theme will be Catholic Schools: Light the Way in our school community. There will be a BHCS faculty and staff luncheon at 1 p.m. *

Mater Dei School, Sioux City

* On Jan. 27 students will minister at 9 a.m. Mass at Nativity Parish. Students and teachers will wear school uniform and/or their Heelan/Mater Dei sweatshirt and process in together. Catholic Schools Light the Way in Our Communitywill be the theme for Jan. 28 and the students will celebrate the 100th Day of school. Mater Dei students will honor occupations in the community by wearing something that represents a job someone does for them in the community - e.g. nurse, police, cook, construction, secretary, teacher, firefighter, grocer, carpenter. Catholic Schools Light the Way in Our Students will be the theme for Jan. 29 and students will be able to wear jeans and Mater Dei or Heelan shirt/sweatshirt. The eighth graders will go to Cathedral for a retreat at 10:10 a.m. The fifth graders will shadow seventh graders for day at Nativity 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The K-5 students will play BINGO from 2:10 to 3 p.m. in the gym. Catholic Schools Light the Way in Our Nation is the theme for Jan. 30. This will be a dress-up day for students as the 6-8 will join k-5 at 9 a.m. Mass at IC. On Jan. 31 the theme will be Catholic Schools Light the Way in Our Vocations. There will be a gym activity day at both centers and students will be able to wear sweatpants and sweatshirts. Catholic Schools Light the Way in Our Faculty, Staff, Volunteers is the theme for Feb. 1. Each class will wear something of a special color. The K-5 students will write thank you notes to people who help them through the year - volunteers, pastors and assistant pastor, cooks, maintenance, AEA, etc. On Feb. 2 there will be a winter carnival at the IC Center.

Sacred Heart School, Sioux City

* On Jan. 28 it will be Family Picnic Day. This day is picnic lunch with children from 12 to 1:15 p.m. Bingo will be held from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. in the gym. Crazy Sock Hop Day will be Jan. 29 and the students may wear their crazy socks with their regular school uniform. At the end of the day there will be an all school Sock Hop in the gym. On Jan. 30 the students will participate in Service/Involvement Day by putting together care packages for soldiers who are serving overseas. Mass/Dress up Day will be Jan. 31 and the students may be out of uniform and wear dress clothes to school. Students from each grade will be asked to participate. On Feb. 1 it will be Faculty and Staff/Student Volleyball Day. This day will be the traditional volleyball match between the eighth grade students and members of Sacred Heart faculty and staff. Students will have a jean/casual wear day and be dismissed at 12 p.m. * Sacred Heart School, Spencer

* On Jan. 25 there will be and all-school Mass at 8:40 a.m. Parish Day will be Jan. 27 with a Mass at 10 a.m. followed by "Soup"er Bowl luncheon. Community Day will be Jan. 28 and students will deliver cookies to the community and to the public schools and the Lutheran school. On Jan. 29 students will participate in Student Day with an all school movie and popcorn in the gym. Dress-down Day will be Jan. 30 and students will collect school supplies such as pens and pencils to be sent to the U.S. Military Stations. On Jan. 31 priests will come in to talk to the students about their vocations. Teacher Day will be Feb. 1 and there will be a school board breakfast for teachers. There will also be bingo and a carnival. * St. Mary School, Storm Lake

* On Jan. 26 high school speech students will offer school highlights at the weekend Masses. On. Jan. 27 there will be a United for Kids carnival in the gymnasium. Students will write notes, draw pictures to show appreciation to their parents that they can attend a Catholic School on Jan. 28. There will be treats for the moms and dads picking up students after school. On Jan. 29 there will be gifts of appreciation taken to organizations that support the school and students will help deliver. Chamber Coffee in gym lobby for community members will be held Jan. 30 and there will be faith-themed posters by elementary students on display. There will be Mass at 2:20 p.m. On Jan. 31 the K-4 students will have sack lunches with parents in the gym - winter picnic. School and parish staff will be recognized with a breakfast at 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 1 in the parish center and student council will serve.
