| | Eight students receive Hagedorn Scholarships
May 17, 2007
This
spring eight more graduating seniors from the Catholic high schools in
the Diocese of Sioux City are receiving scholarships from the Mary
Catherine Hagedorn Trust based in Lake View.
Throughout many
academic years, this trust has generated over $580,600 for
scholarships. Since 1979, 310 students have benefited as scholarship
winners.
Named after a Catholic farming woman, Mary Catherine
Hagedorn, the trust was founded in accordance with her last will and
testament through the sale of farmland in Sac County. Since then,
annual reports of all transactions of the trust have been made to the
State of Iowa for review and approval through the Sac County Court
House.
Current trustees are Colin McCullough, McCullough Law
Firm, Lake View; and William Vonnahme, retired bank officer of Carroll
County State Bank, Carroll. According to them, the trust has not only
perpetuated the name of Mary Catherine Hagedorn, but has also
underscored the importance of Catholic high schools and the further
education of their graduates.
This year, each scholarship winner
will receive an award of $1,900 in four installments during their
freshman and sophomore years of college.
Recommendations of
winners were made by nominating committees at each of the eight
Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Sioux City. The winners for
