Do you know an excellent educator?
Nominations sought for Excellence in Education Award

Do you know an excellent schoolteacher who is presently serving in a Catholic school in the Diocese of Sioux City? Nominations are currently being sought for the Bishop's Excellence in Education Award that will be presented at the 2007 Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Education.

Anyone - parent, peer, administrator or parishioner - may nominate any teacher who 
Award Criteria

The nominee for The Bishop's Excellence in Education Teacher Award must be:

1) A teacher in a Catholic school of the Diocese of Sioux city for at least five consecutive years at the time of nomination and at the time of the Bishop's Dinner when award is given.

2) A teacher, who has a clear, integrated philosophy of Catholic education.

3) A teacher who has developed and implemented innovative/original curriculum strategies.

4) A teacher who is held in high regard by peers, students and/or parents.

5) A teacher who is a witness of his or her Catholic faith in his or her professional and personal life.

serves in a Catholic school of the Diocese of Sioux City and has proven to be excellent in the classroom.

Teachers who receive this honor are not only publicly recognized at the Bishop's Dinner, but they also receive a monetary award from a Catholic School Foundation Endowment. Four teachers will receive this prestigious award this year.

"These are teachers who represent the best parts of our Catholic schools and live their lives as role models for their students and the rest of the Catholic community," wrote Kevin Vickery, superintendent of Catholic schools, in a letter to pastors.

Nomination forms are available in the office at every Catholic school. The forms should also be available in all parish offices.

The deadline to nominate teachers is April 20. These nominations are to be sent to the Superintendent of Schools, Office of Education, 1821 Jackson St., Sioux City, IA 51102 and should be postmarked by April 20.

Once nominated, other required steps must be taken by the teacher applicant. They are to complete an application form, provide a brief resume, include a letter of nomination from the principal as well as two to four letters of nomination. The letters of nomination might highlight one or some of the following elements: the teacher's philosophy of Catholic education, innovative teaching strategies used to meet a specific curriculum goal and how parental/community involvement is incorporated into the curriculum.
