Forgiveness focus of Lenten retreat for Hispanics

Forgiveness will be the focus of a retreat for Hispanics in the Diocese of Sioux City to be presented three times at three different sites this Lenten season.

According to Juan Garcia, diocesan assistant director of Hispanic ministry, the Lenten retreat will be presented at Christ the King in Sioux Center on March 11, in the gymnasium of Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City on March 25 and at St. Mary's in Storm Lake on April 8. The retreat, which will be presented in Spanish, will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at each of the three locations.

"People need this type of retreat because they need to forgive a lot in daily life," he noted. "We need to forgive and learn how to forgive."

Garcia pointed out that in addition to listening to speakers, those who attend the retreat will be involved in exercises where they can practice the art of forgiving and accepting forgiveness. Part of the experience will center on visualizing Christ's presence and seeking his help with forgiveness.

In forming the retreat, Garcia said that he took retreat elements that he learned in Mexico as well as things that he has learned in the United States.

"I've put together the best things that I learned in each country for the retreat," he said.

Garcia and several other individuals that serve on the Hispanic Core Group will facilitate the retreat.

This same Lenten retreat centered on forgiveness has been offered in the diocese for several years now. Each year, very positive evaluations have been received.

He said part of the popularity of the retreat comes from the fact that forgiveness - the need to give it and receive it - is part of human life. Those who attend the retreat will also learn the importance of forgiving themselves.

"Most people think that it is hard to say, 'I'm sorry.' But it's really hard to forgive ourselves - that's the most difficult part," noted Garcia.

The Hispanic minister mentioned that forgiveness is an ideal topic for Lent because many of the Scripture readings during this season, invite people to forgive.

There is no cost to attend the retreat. For lunch, people are asked to bring food that can be shared with others - a simple potluck.

While no pre-registration is required, if persons plan to attend Garcia would appreciate a phone call so ample retreat materials are on hand. For more information, contact Garcia at (712) 233-7536. The retreat is intended for youth and adults, both male and females.

Those who attend will be given material that they can bring home.
