Meet the new DCCW officers

The 2004 officers of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will take office on July 1. They were named to office during the DCCW convention in April at the Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend.

The officers were installed during a Mass at the convention. Father James Tigges, the diocesan moderator, installed the officers.

Each woman was given a candle that was lit by Father Tigges when he called each of them forth.

"The candle's light is soft and gentle," said Father Tigges. "It is not glaring or harsh. This is the leadership quality most likely to obtain cooperative results."

The women replied that they are the "Sioux City Diocesan Council of Catholic Women who will keep the flame of that candle always burning."

Then each of the new officers were told that they had been selected and were asked, "Will you light your candle from one of these symbolizing Jesus Christ, the light of the world, as an evidence of your pledge to serve?"

The women answered, "I will."

Sheilah Pound of St. Joseph Parish in Jefferson was named the new president of the DCCW. In her parish, she is a music minister, liturgy coordinator, part of adult faith formation and a pastoral associate.

"I have always believed in the Council of Catholic Women," said Pound. "Since I was very young my mother was involved. She brought me along, and I enjoyed it. I really think there are wonderful things that are being done, can be done and will be done."

She came back into the council about six years ago as part of the public relations commission. Between parish, deanery and diocesan councils, Pound has held positions such as parish president and secretary, deanery family and legislative and diocesan public relations and vice-president.

Joyce Roling was named vice-president of the DCCW. She lives in Storm Lake and belongs to St. Joseph in Schaller because Storm Lake does not have an active CCW. She is currently the Central Deanery president and part of the diocesan legislature. She also belongs to the Catholic Daughters of America, the Women's Commission, the VFW and participates in Beginning Experience.

"They were having a hard time finding someone," said Roling. "I said I would run as co-president with someone. I didn't want to move up."

She joined the DCCW in 1988 and commented that she loves the DCCW. For the last eight years, she has been the Central Deanery president.

A co-vice-president will be chosen at a later date.

Edra Broich was named the secretary of the DCCW at the Mass. She resides in Carroll and is a parishioner at St. Lawrence Church. In her parish, she is a lector, Eucharistic minister and assists wherever there is a need. She first became a member of the DCCW in about 1958. She was a deanery president in the '60s. She is currently part of the Diocesan Family Life Commission.

"It gives us a chance to meet other Catholic women," said Broich. "We have excellent educational programs that we learn from as well as the religious part of it that is important when you are going to do volunteering."

Zelma Sholly, the current co-president, was named the new treasurer for the DCCW. She is a member of Sacred Heart Church in Spencer. In her parish, she is a Eucharistic Minister.

"I believe in the organization very much, what we do and what we hope to do in the future," said Sholly. "It would be great to pick up a few new members."

She has been involved in the DCCW since the late 1960s and has served as Northwest Deanery president, vice-president and treasurer. She will be the new secretary for the Northwest Deanery. On the diocesan level, she has been a family commissioner, treasurer, vice-president and president.
