Rogation Days observed in the dioceseMay 13, 2004Dear Friends in Christ, In rural America, and specifically in rural Northwest Iowa, our Diocese of Sioux City, we are again called by the Diocesan Coalition to Preserve Family Farms to celebrate "Rogation Days." This occurs on three days, not specified, during the week before the celebration of the Solemnity of the Ascension on May 23, 2004 These are Days of Prayer or "rogation" during the seedtime of the year. We call upon our Generous God who is the Creator of all things for a deeper appreciation on behalf of our fields and the farmers and gardeners who care for them. By our prayer we recognize our responsibility to have a just and faithful stewardship of the land, the water and the air around us. We also seek God's blessings on the seeds planted to receive a harvest as well as the protection and safety of all who labor to achieve this. By our recalling these needs we do not forget our dependence on our generous and loving God. We also accept our shared roll with Him to sustain and care for these gifts of His creation for us. I support these days of prayer. Useful materials for the liturgical celebrations, for reading and reflection are provided by the Diocesan Coalition for each parish. May the prayers of the faithful of this diocese bring forth a rich harvest of the fruits of the earth this coming growing season. Sincerely yours in Christ, |
