The four dioceses in Iowa are collaborating to offer a catechetical
conference centered on adult faith formation. Specifically, the conference will
focus on adult faith formation inspired by the initiatory catechesis.
"We know that RCIA is a prominent part of adult faith formation,"
noted Kay Morrissey, director of the Office of Faith Formation for the Diocese
of Sioux City. "We know that it changes lives - that people walk into it
wanting to explore or ask questions about the Catholic Church. It is an ongoing
process by which they join the church at Easter."
She stressed that the educational process not only has an impact on those
joining the church, but also on those who serve as sponsors.
"Often people have found it very enriching for themselves to be part of
the process. They frequently volunteer again the next time and sometimes for
several years as a sponsor," said Morrissey. "We will look at what
that process can say to us about adult faith formation in all aspects of parish
life."
The conference, slated for 7 to 9 p.m. on May 3 and 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on
May 4, will be held at the Conference Center in Newton, Iowa.
Dr. Jane Regan, a member of the theology faculty at Boston College who
teaches in the Institute for Religious Education and Pastor Ministry, is the
keynote speaker. Her academic background that includes a Ph.D. in religious
education from the Catholic University of America is complemented by her more
than 20 years of pastoral work experience.
Morrissey pointed out that this conference is not only open to pastors,
pastoral ministers, liturgists, RCIA teams and other catechetical leaders, but
all interested adults. She encouraged parishes and/or clusters to send a team of
four to six individuals so they could share the workload as well as offer
inspiration and support to one another.
"One person can listen to these ideas and think through things, but if
they are isolation, the only person there from this area, then they have to try
to convey to other people what they heard. But if a small group hears the
message together, it creates a higher energy base for going home and making a
difference," she said.
Along with the information presented by the keynote speaker, Morrissey said
those who attend are bound to gain some ideas regarding adult faith formation
through networking.
Morrissey sees a need for adult faith formation in parishes as it not only
can enrich people spiritually, but also can gives people the knowledge and
confidence to give of their time to various parish ministries such as serving as
a catechist or on the liturgy committee.
If people register by April 19, cost of the conference is $45 per person or
$165 for four registrations mailed together. After April 19, add $5 to this fee.
Morrissey pointed out that people may have the possibility of securing
Empowerment Funds for the conference. If interested in applying for a
scholarship that could cover up to 50 percent of costs of the conference,
contact the Office of Faith Formation as soon as possible.
Conference brochures have been mailed to all parishes in the dioceses or
individuals may secure on-line at the diocesan Web site - www.scdiocese.org,
and then click on faith formation. For more information, contact the Office of
Faith Formation at (712) 233-7530.
