Fifth Annual Holiday of Lights at the Grotto of the Redemption

December 11, 2003

WEST BEND - The Grotto of the Redemption is aglow with thousands of Christmas lights each evening until 10:30 p.m. in December. The Holiday lights emphasize the magnificent structure of the Grotto, which covers more than one city block and includes stones and semi-precious stones from around the world. It tells the beautiful story of Christ's life and our Redemption in stone.

"On Nov. 30, the Grotto was lit to coincide with the first Sunday of Advent. It was a beautiful way to conclude a day of spiritual growth as we had gathered earlier at Saints Peter and Paul Church for a memorable mini retreat and a Healing Mass," commented Audrey Niemann, executive director of the Grotto.

She pointed out that the story of the Grotto's origins is a moving one. As a young German seminarian, Paul Dobberstein became critically ill with pneumonia. As he fought for his life he prayed to the Blessed Mother to intercede for him. He promised to build a shrine in her honor if he lived. He made his recovery, completed his studies and was ordained.

In 1898, Father Paul Dobberstein came to West Bend as the pastor of Saints Peter and Paul Church. For over a decade he stockpiled rocks and precious stones before beginning the actual construction of the Grotto in 1912. His designs of the cavern-like spaces in the Grotto were inspired by the paintings and icons depicting caves as places where early Christians went to meet God.

"The glow of the holiday lights and the snow on the Grotto creates a festive look. Here you and your family can take some time from the busy activities of the season to share time together and reflect on the message of Christmas," said Niemann.

The Grotto of the Redemption is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is open for visitation year round. Tours are offered from May until mid October or by appointment.
