Each year the Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Education is headed up by an
individual or couple that have a strong belief in Catholic schools. This year is
no different.
Dr. Ken and Debbie McCalla have been selected to chair the seventh annual
dinner that is scheduled for Oct. 19.
"We are very pleased that the McCallas have agreed to lead this event.
They have been great help in the past and they are strong believers in Catholic
education," said Steve Elbert, director of stewardship and development for
the diocese. "We know that they are generous stewards - giving of their
time, talent and treasure - and for that we are grateful."
Two years ago the McCallas chaired the food and wine committee with another
couple.
The McCallas said it is an honor to chair such an important event.
Debbie, a native of Omaha, was educated in Catholic schools there. She
continued her Catholic education at Mount Marty College in Yankton and later
completed the R.N. to B.S.N. program at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City.
She uses her nursing skills on a volunteer basis, working in the parish nursing
ministry at Sacred Heart Church in Sioux City as well as offering her talents as
the school nurse. In addition, she volunteers for the Woodbury Medical Society
Alliance.
During Catholic Schools Week, Debbie was invited to speak to the students
about the difference in Catholic schools. She compared it to building a house
with a strong foundation and good materials.
"It not only is stronger and able to stand up to whatever nature might
bring it, but is also more beautiful," she recalled that she told the
students.
The McCallas are strong supporters of Catholic education.
"For me, Catholic education provides for all of our parts - physical,
emotional, intellectual and especially our spiritual," said Debbie.
"Catholic education provides a strong foundation so we are able to get
through life with a strong faith and strong commitment to our values."
The McCallas son Cody is a freshman at Heelan High School and their son
Taylor is in the seventh grade at Sacred Heart Grade School.
The Bishop's Dinner for Catholic Education will be held at the Sioux City
Convention Center. As in past years, proceeds of the dinner will benefit every
Catholic school in the Diocese of Sioux City.
"I would encourage people to attend not only to support Catholic
education, but also because it has always been a nice time - getting to see
people from other schools and parishes," said Debbie.
The McCallas pointed out that they plan to call upon many individuals to help
make it a successful event, including Catholic school supporters from parishes
throughout the city and possibly outlying areas.
Elbert extended thanks to all of the former chairpersons "that set the
foundation of success for the bishop's dinner. I also want to thank all of the
participants and the sponsors for all that they have done throughout the years.
We are hoping to have another great bishop's dinner."
