GLOBE STAFF REPORT
Posted Sept. 19, 2002

Children need somewhere to go after school until there parents get off work. What a better place for them to go than to the Beyond the Bell program.

Sacred Heart in Sioux City started the Beyond the Bell program Sept. 10 at their grade school. The program is offered to students in grades K-8.

There are currently 14 students that attend the program after school. The students are mostly K-5 along with two sixth graders and one seventh grader.

"They wanted to expand the Beyond the Bell program into another school," said Jacque LaFleur, site manager at Sacred Heart.

Monday through Thursday the students participate in an educational activity. It is something that isn't as structured as in the classroom, commented LaFleur.

Currently, the program is just getting started so the students come in take attendance, have a healthy snack, play outside, do homework or arts and crafts.

Other things planned for the weeks to come are cooking, sports, performing arts and music. They are still waiting on supplies for some of the activities. They plan to take field trips to places such as the Siouxland Y and the Mary Treglia Community House.
