LAKE VIEW - This spring, eight more graduating seniors from the Catholic high schools of the Diocese of Sioux City are receiving scholarships from the Mary Catherine Hagedorn Trust based in Lake View. Throughout the many academic years, this trust has generated $519,000 for scholarship funds. Moreover, 270 students have benefited as scholarship winners since 1979.

Named after a Catholic farming woman, Mary Catherine Hagedorn, the trust was founded in accordance with her last will and testament through the sale of farmland in Sac County. Since then, annual reports of all transactions of the trust have been made to the state of Iowa for review and approval through the Sac County Court House.

The recipient from Heelan High School in Sioux City is Ryan Block, the son of Peter and Mary Block of Sioux City. He will be attending Briar Cliff University this fall and will study business.

Briley Lindner of St. Edmond High School in Fort Dodge is the daughter of Douglas and Kathy Lindner of Fort Dodge. She will be attending Iowa Central Community College for nursing.

The recipient from Gehlen High School in Le Mars is Christopher Schlichte. He is the son of Jerome and Nancy Schlichte of Brunsville. Christopher plans on attending Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. He will study communications.

Jacquie Schroeder, the daughter of Daniel and Julia Schroeder of Granville, received the scholarship from Spalding High School in Granville. She will be attending St. Thomas University for business finance.

Current trustees are Colin McCullough, McCullough Law Firm of Lake View and Msgr. James Lafferty, pastor of St. John's Church in Ogden. The trust has not only perpetuated the name of Mary Catherine Hagedorn, but has also underscored the importance of Catholic high schools and the further education of their graduates.

This year, each scholarship winner will receive an award of $1,500 in four installments during the freshman and sophomore years of college. Recommendations of winners were made by nominating committees at each college.
