Bishop to lead Lenten ICN presentation

Catholics across the Diocese of Sioux City are invited to attend a Lenten reflection by Bishop Daniel N. DiNardo.

"The Canon of Repentance," a Lenten reflection, will be presented by the bishop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Feb. 25 at eight ICN sites throughout the diocese.

Pat Rinker, director of youth and young adult ministry, pointed out that every year they offered an ICN presentation for their catechists and youth ministers that was centered on adult spirituality. Because this topic would appeal and be beneficial to all adults, the presentation was put on the schedule of centennial events.

"The Canon of Repentance" is designed for all adults to see Lent in a way in which they become more attached to and immersed in the texts of Scriptures. The text is a series of meditations on passages in the Old and New Testament.

Rinker noted that repentance in itself is very much a Lenten theme because that is part of the journey people go through during Lent. He added that the March ICN for youth would focus on reconciliation.

And while the Feb. 25 presentation is open to all adults, he strongly recommends that catechists, youth ministers and schoolteachers attend.

"We can only share what we have. And if we want to lead our youth to deeper conversion and a deeper commitment of faith, we need to be constantly growing ourselves," said Rinker. With this in mind, he added that many documents of the church refer to parents as the primary catechists. "We, as parents, need to continue to grow in our faith."

He referred to the document, "Our Hearts are Burning Within Us" that states the church is the curriculum of catechesis. All church members play a role in passing on the faith to children.

"Adult formation is critical to the effectiveness of all other ministries in the church," said Rinker. "A well formed adult in their faith is better equipped to be a youth minister, catechist, a Catholic school teacher, parent - a witness of faith to others. Out of their love and commitment to Christ please feel welcome to attend."

This ICN will include presentation, reflection and sharing.

ICN sites include: Carroll at the Des Moines Area Community College, Early at Early-Schaller-Crestland High School, Sheldon Community College, Cylinder at the Area Education Association, Fort Dodge at the public library, Sioux City at Bishop Heelan High School, Milford-Okoboji High School and Remsen at St. Mary's High School.

Rinker pointed out that pre-registration is required to ensure adequate seating. Please respond by Feb. 18. Call Judy Forrest at 712-233-7520 or e-mail judyf@scdiocese.org. Sites without persons registered by Feb. 18 will be cancelled, so organizers stress the importance of pre-registering.

There is no charge to attend the presentation, as the event is part of the Centennial Celebration of the Diocese of Sioux City.
