Reflections on education
in diocese
Dear Catholic school communities: Celebrating Catholic Schools Week, 2002, is particularly significant during this Diocesan Centennial Year, the year of celebrating 100 years of faith. The theme of Catholic Schools Week, 2002, Where Faith and Knowledge Meet, offers us the opportunity to reflect on the unique history of Catholic schools in the Diocese of Sioux City. This heritage that we celebrate encompasses over 100 years of Catholic education in a large number of schools and many parishes. The sacrifices of the pioneer priests, religious, and lay persons, with their conviction of the importance of establishing Catholic schools has insured the strong presence of Catholic education today. We are particularly proud of you, the faithful who continue this heritage of sacrifice and commitment to the mission of Catholic education, the education and formation of the young to be disciples of Christ. Persons working together in communities whose center is Jesus Christ will meet the new challenges of this century, as they have in the past. Our heritage is celebrated best when we take courage and inspiration from our ancestors to make our present and future better. We are grateful to all who participate in any way to build up the church through Catholic education. Let us strive with renewed spirit to participate in the life of the church as it is lived and taught in the Catholic school communities of our diocese. We are called to build a world in which peace thrives, children learn, the poor and needy are cared for with dignity, and all are free to celebrate the God-life within each person. May each day of Catholic Schools Week be an inspiration which we carry throughout the school year, because it is the place Where Faith and Knowledge Meet, a Catholic school of this century in the Diocese of Sioux City. With gratitude and prayers, Sr. Joan Stoffel, OSF |
