10 years ago – 2006

VATICAN CITY – After years of archaeological work, Vatican officials announced they have identified the tomb of St. Paul beneath the Rome basilica dedicated to the apostle.

MILFORD – Milford student receives Diocesan Youth Ministry Award.  Unable to attend the Diocesan Youth Rally in October, the youth recipient, Tyler Coleman, was honored in his home parish in Milford over the Thanksgiving break.

REMSEN – St. Mary’s Grade School students in Remsen experienced the light twice Dec. 13 as they celebrated the Feast of St. Lucy as well as the sacrament of reconciliation.

25 years ago – 1991

ANTHON – Jim and Becky Venteicher, parishioners of St. Joseph Parish, Anthon, were District 4 winners in the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s 1991 outstanding young member. The announcement was made at a banquet during the IFBF annual meeting in Des Moines on Dec. 3. The Venteichers received a $50 gift certificate for farm supplies.

SIOUX CITY – Siouxlanders contributed $45.475.79 to Marian Health Center’s Light A Child’s Life Counseling Program.  The preliminary figures were announced at Marian’s Christmas decoration lighting ceremony.

SAC CITY – The confirmation class from St. Mary Church in Sac City, recently took part in a Wheels for Life bike-a-thon.  They rode more than 240 miles and raised over $736 for St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.

50 years ago – 1966

SIOUX CITY – Heelan High School captured top honors in the Wayne State College’s First Annual Invitational Debate Tournament here Saturday. In addition to the first place trophy, all Heelan debaters merited “superior” or “excellent” recognition in all eight rounds.

CARROLL – Mr. and Mrs. Joe Riesselman, members of St. Lawrence parish here, recently observed their golden wedding anniversary. A special Mass was celebrated for the jubilarians in St. Lawrence Church by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Henry B. Karhoff. Michael and Bob Riesselman, grandsons of the couple, were Mass servers.

YANKTON, S.D. – Among new postulants in the Order of St. Benedict at Sacred Heart Convent is Margaret Flanagan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Flanagan of Rock Valley, Iowa. The 16 members of the class, who recently received the veils of postulancy, will be postulants for six months before being invested as Novice Sisters early next summer.
