10 years ago – 2006
SIOUX CITY – Bishop R. Walker Nickless of the Diocese of Sioux City announced the appointment of Msgr. R. Mark Duchaine as vicar general and moderator of the curia of the Diocese of Sioux City, and that of David Lopez, Ph.D., as chancellor of the diocese. These appointments will take effect on Jan. 15.
SIOUX CITY – A seminarian of the Diocese of Sioux City will take a step closer to the priesthood on Dec. 15. Brent Lingle, a parishioner at Sacred Heart Church in Sioux City, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate by Bishop R. Walker Nickless in a 6 p.m. service at Cathedral of the Epiphany.
HAWARDEN – Dan Kelly, James Bushby, Steve Toft, Tyler Jurrens and Michael Puhl became members of the local Knights of Columbus Council. Two of the young men are the third or fourth generation of their families to become Knights. Tyler and Michael are both sons of KC members and grandsons of KC members. All three generations were on hand for the ceremony.
25 years ago – 1991
SIOUX CITY – Three Sioux City Heelan High School seniors have been awarded a trip to the 70th annual National 4-H Congress in Chicago Dec. 6-12. The three students are Kevin Curren, Andrea Funk and Christine Locke.
CARROLL – Carroll Kuemper receiver Mike Staiert was selected to a first team berth on the Iowa Newspaper All-State team. Staiert, a 6-4 receiver for the Knights was selected to the Class 3A-2A team.
SIOUX CITY – John Harty of Sioux City, a former member of the San Francisco 49ers and a Heelan lineman, was among nine former prep players and coaches inducted in the Iowa High School Football Hall of Fame as part of the play-off games at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls Nov. 15.
50 years ago – 1966
SIOUX CITY – The Most Rev. Joseph M. Mueller, D. D., Bishop of Sioux City, set a precedent on Nov. 25 at a diocesan-wide clergy conference when he allowed the priests of the diocese to elect their brother – priests to a number of important offices in the diocese, including the board of consultors and the deans of the six deaneries.
CARROLL – Optimism and determination are reported to have keyed the initial basketball workout at Kuemper High School recently. Coach Dick Wiedenfeld faces a big rebuilding job with only one letterman, Louie Billmeier, on a 20-member squad battling with grim determination for spots on the varsity crew.
EARLY – The 1967 CYO Leadership Training Course is expected to draw more than 200 youths from the diocese, according to Father Paul Alvey, Civic Activities Director of the CYO.
