National CCW set for September

In the opening chapter of Declaration on Religious Liberty, Dec. 7, l965, Council Fathers at Vatican II declared the human person has a right to religious freedom. The Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to Bear Witness will take place June 21 to July 4 with the call for intense prayer and penance.

During this time, the church honors a series of great martyrs such as St. Thomas More, St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist, Sts. Peter and Paul and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. During this time, each of us are asked to join the Call to Prayer ( and connect with others in prayer and penance for life, marriage and religious liberty. At a recent board meeting, the upcoming National Council of Catholic Women Convention was announced beginning on Sept. 9 with preliminary events along with the president’s welcome reception at 5:45 p.m. The opening session at 8:45 a.m. on Sept. 10 features the keynote speaker, Brandon Vogt, author, blogger, and content director for Father Robert Barron’s Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. At 1:30 p.m., Dr. Carolyn Woo, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, will speak. Opening liturgy will take place at 4 p.m. at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe.

Sept. 11 will feature the concurrent training session on spirituality, leadership and service. The team presidents’ forum will also be held. Liturgy will be held along with the 95th birthday celebration luncheon.

Richard Doerflinger, associate director of the secretariat of pro-life activities for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, will speak Sept. 12 at 9:15 a.m. Also featured is Marybeth Hicks, author, media commentator, and marketing director for Faith Catholic.
