5 years ago – 2013

STORM LAKE – St. Mary’s Parish culminated several days of celebration for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with a bilingual parish Mass Dec. 12. Father Timothy Friedrichsen presided at the Mass with Father David Esquiliano and Deacon Mark Prosser assisting.

ALTON – The Spalding Catholic FIRST LEGO League team received first place for their presentation at the regional tournament on Dec. 7 at West High School in Sioux City. MaKenna Alesch, Sage Goergen, Jamie Pohlen and Katelyn Willett represented the Spartan team.

10 years ago – 2008

SANBORN – The Garrigan Assembly presented Father Timothy Hogan, pastor at St. Cecilia Parish in Sanborn, St. Joseph Parish in Hartley, Sacred Heart Parish in Sutherland and St. Anthony Parish in Primghar, with a chalice in remembrance of John Small, who died in a construction accident. He belonged to St. Michael’s Parish in Sioux City, and was a member of KC Council 12350 and a Fourth Degree Knight in the Garrigan Assembly.

SIOUX CITY – With less than two weeks remaining in the year, the Msgr. Lafferty Tuition Foundation has about $400,000 left to raise toward its goal of $1.96 million.  Eighty percent of the $1.96 million was allocated to schools and designations were made based on a per capita student enrollment.  The schools were given a deadline of Dec. 15 to reach their goals.

25 years ago – 1993

WEST BEND – Sts. Peter and Paul School in West Bend recently became the first school in the diocese to complete a year-long process of self-study, self-evaluation and planning. The diocesan board of education first discussed the self-study process in November of 1991.

EARLY – The first diocesan retreat for Spanish-speaking youth was held at the Sacred Heart Parish Center in Early on Dec. 3-5. The youth represented several communities throughout the diocese.

70 years ago – Dec. 1950

POCAHONTAS – The Rev. Father N. Boes of Pomeroy was guest speaker recently at the sodality meeting of Sacred Heart high school here. Father Boes reviewed his trip to Rome, Oberammergau, Lourdes and Lisieux.  He illustrated his talk with technicolor films.

ALVORD – The Sacred Heart Altar Society will hold its annual Christmas party Dec. 7.  The regular monthly business meeting will also be held at that time. An exchange of gifts will feature the party.
