Legacy of Pope Paul VI focus of Oct. 13 event

A pope who will be canonized in October will be the focus of a catechetical event next month.

The Legacy of Pope Paul VI will be presented from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Oct. 13 at the Shrine of Trinity Heights Queen of Peace. The event is free and open to the public.

BLESSED PAUL VI CANONIZATION             According to Fred Shellabarger, director of evangelization and discipleship for the diocese, the impetus for the event was three-fold.

“One, my own love and appreciation of Blessed Pope Paul VI, who was truly a great catechetical pope,” he said. “Secondly, it has been a goal of our office to provide extended catechetical sessions just like this – be it in a day or as part of a series.”

Blessed Paul’s canonization on Oct. 14 was the last element, Shellabarger noted.

“The canonization provided a unique opportunity in which we could not only honor this great – and often prophetic – pope but also help to share his teachings with others, celebrate his legacy and even more, his canonization.”

The event will include discussions of the papacy of Paul VI by Deacon David Lopez; Humanae Vitae by Father Pat Behm; Ecclesiam Suam by Julie Storr; Mysterium Fidei by Brandon Harvey and Evangelii Nuntiandi by Shellabarger.

It was Shellabarger’s hope that participants would come away with a better understanding of Blessed Paul VI’s teachings; an appreciation of his papacy and a deeper sense of one’s call to holiness and mission.

“Social media response to promoting the event has been great,” he said. “It has been gratifying getting to provide such a unique celebration and catechetical opportunity in collaboration with the Trinity Heights Queen of Peace.”

This is a come-and-go event, so registration is not required. Meals will not be provided. For more information, visit scdiocese.org/legacy-pope-paul-vi-celebration/.
