10 years ago – 2008

LE MARS – The chaircouple for the 2008 Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Education didn’t even know they were nominated. Then Rick and Mary Kneip of Le Mars received a phone call from Kristie Arlt, diocesan director of communication and stewardship, notifying them of their selection.

FORT DODGE – Six women from Holy Trinity Parish in Webster County have begun a social group for the women of the parish. The group has been named “Friends of the Spirit.”

25 years ago – 1993

DENVER – Pope John Paul II honored Father Dennis Schnurr, a priest who is a native of Hospers, by naming him an Honorary Prelate of His Holiness with the title of monsignor. The pope named him a Prelate of Honor at a World Youth Day Mass in Denver Aug. 13.

ST. BENEDICT – Stella Eischen began playing the organ at St. Benedict Parish when she was 18 years old and “green as a gourd,” she remembers with a laugh. Eischen took on the responsibility in 1943 with only three years of piano lessons. It led to her 50-year career at St. Benedict, a tiny parish near Algona, where she is also a member of the Ladies Guild, Catholic Daughters and a parish historian.

50 years ago – 1968

OYENS – Rosanne Schnepf, a member of St. Catherine Parish, has returned to the United States after completing three years’ volunteer service in Latin America as a Papal Volunteer. After her orientation and language training (1965), Miss Schnepf was assigned to work in her profession as a medical technologist in a clinic for the poor of Comas, a suburb of Lima, Peru.

PRIMGHAR – Sister Joseph Adele Halbach, daughter of Mrs. Joseph H. Halbach of Primghar, was elected to membership in the general governing body of the Congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters. Sister Joseph Adele is a graduate of Primghar High School and Clarke College in Dubuque.

70 years ago – April 9, 1950

ALTON – St. Mary High School will present the comedy, “Pride and Prejudice,” in the school auditorium, April 16. In the cast will be Joan Van Gronigan, Jack Schmit, Mariwyn Schneider, Norma Schneider, Agnes Pottebaum, Mary Ann Zenk, Opal Biever, Dan Doherty, Glen Van Gronigan, Joann Stoos, Joe Konz, Phil Nacke, Bill Bowers and Jean Huss.

ODEBOLT – The seventh and eighth grades of St. Martin School are making plans for a three-day hobby art craft display to be held in May. Members of the science class visited the Odebolt Telephone Company as a feature of their study of the telephone and how calls are made.
