After a considerable amount of discussion with Canterbury Pilgrimages & Tours of Bedford, N.H., and The Catholic Globe Board of Directors, the decision was made not to offer pilgrims in the Diocese of Sioux City a World Youth Day trip to Panama in 2019.
It is with much regret that I make this announcement.
Since The Catholic Globe first started its promotion of the trip in February, there has been literally no response to the newspaper advertisements or activity on the Canterbury website regarding the Sioux City diocesan trip.
We knew embarking on this endeavor that the price tag ($3,345) and time of year (Jan. 21-28, 2019) would be a challenge. We were guardedly optimistic that we would have enough pilgrims to justify the trip.
But even with posters, brochures, reaching out to the Dioceses of Sioux Falls and Winona-Rochester, Minn., the Archdiocese of Omaha, Briar Cliff University, University of South Dakota and University of Nebraska-Omaha, promotion at events about the trip, and a color advertisement in each edition of the newspaper, we simply could not generate any interest.
With a deadline of Nov. 7 fast approaching and no registrants, Canterbury gently recommended ceasing the promotion. When presented with that suggestion, The Catholic Globe Board of Directors agreed.
If you are interested in the event, please contact the Diocese of Des Moines for information on its pilgrimage at http://www.dmdiocese.org/world-youth-day.cfm.
