10 years ago – 2008

SIOUX CITY – As the number of priests who serve in active ministry in the Diocese of Sioux City declines, a long-range planning process is underway to evaluate how to best utilize priest manpower while providing the most effective ministry at parishes. Currently, there are 78 priests available for active ministry. By 2019, the number of active priests available under the age of 70 is expected to be 39.

SIOUX CITY – Members of Boy Scout Troop 225 and the youth group from Immaculate Conception and Nativity Parishes in Sioux City gathered June 20 to help their friend Thomas Auen, one of the Boys Scouts injured June 11 in the tornado at the Little Sioux Scout Camp near Blencoe.

25 years ago – 1993

SIOUX CITY – The statue of Mary at Trinity Heights in Sioux City was dedicated Sunday. Special guests at the Queen of Peace dedication began the recessional for the ceremony.

SIOUX CITY – Tim Johnson was ordained a priest in a ceremony held June 12 at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. Born April 5, 1957, Father Johnson is the son of Eileen and the late Edward Johnson.

50 years ago – 1968

HAWARDEN – Heelan High School combined good hitting with fine performances from the mound and took both ends of a double header with West Sioux, winning the first 8-2 and the nightcap 7-1.

CEDAR RAPIDS – Nancy Ann Tiefenthaler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Tiefenthaler, Carroll, was recipient of the senior award at commencement exercises of the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing here.

70 years ago – Jan. 12, 1950

SIOUX CITY – Members of the newly organized Catholic College Club recently elected the following officers: Miss Barbara Cosgrove, president; Bernard Cooper, vice president; Miss Mary Ann Grippo of Pickstown, S.D., recording secretary; Miss Reba Patterson of Danbury, corresponding secretary, and Edward Choursiel of Chicago, treasurer.

MANSON – Two short plays were given by the pupils of the Red School under the direction of their teacher, Miss Norma Moline, at the December meeting of the Women’s Club of St. Thomas parish. The Girl Scouts, under the direction of Mrs. Elcena Pageler, sang several yuletide selections.
