POCAHONTAS – Sts. Peter and Paul Historical Site in Pocahontas will celebrate its quasquicentennial June 22 with a Mass. This marks 125 years Catholicism in Pocahontas. The Bohemian settlers began construction on the first Catholic church in the country, Sts. Peter and Paul Church at the cemetery east of town, 125 years ago.
EMMETSBURG – Emmetsburg Catholic School held its 20th annual Auction Fest this spring raising a record $96,000.
25 years ago – 1993
SIOUX CITY – Tim Johnson of Wesley will be ordained by Bishop Lawrence D. Soens at 10:30 a.m. June 12. The ceremony will be held at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City. Johnson is the only man being ordained in the diocese this year.
SIOUX CITY – Bernard “Beanie” Cooper, a local sports personality and humorist, was the featured speaker at the Catholic Charities 50th Anniversary celebration June 4.
50 years ago – 1968
SIOUX CITY – William V. Tucker, academic dean of Briar Cliff College, received his doctor of education degree from the University of South Dakota at the university’s commencement exercises.
DUBUQUE – Four girls from the Sioux City diocese have received bachelor of arts degrees from Clarke College. They are Martha J. Hamilton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Hamilton of Storm Lake; Donna Hartnett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Hartnett of Sioux City; Shannon McGarry, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard P. McGarry of Sioux City and Judith Winterfeld, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur C. Winterfeld of Le Mars.
70 years ago – Jan. 8, 1950
AKRON – Children of St. Joseph’s school entertained their parents and friends with a Christmas program in the school hall. After the program there was a gift exchange and treats. The grade children of the school went to Westfield, the mission parish attached to Akron and sang hymns at the Christmas Mass in St. Catherine’s church. The Rev. Charles Ernst is pastor.
SALIX – Mrs. Maurice Choquette is the newly elected president of the Tabernacle Society of St. Joseph Parish. Other officers are: Mrs. Art Chicoine, vice-president, and Mrs. Robert Hout, secretary-treasurer.
