Father Robert Brown dies at age 79

Father Robert Patrick Brown, 79, of Sioux City, formerly of Emmetsburg, died Monday, Jan. 1, 2018 at Holy Spirit Nursing Home in Sioux City.

Services were Jan. 8 at Holy Family Church in Emmetsburg, with Father Clem Currans officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Ayrshire, under the direction of Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.

Robert Patrick Brown, the son of Matthew and Mabel (Iverson) Brown, was born March 17, 1938. He began his education in Ayrshire and then attended St. Mary Academy in Emmetsburg, which later became Emmetsburg Catholic School. While in high school, Bob played guard for the boys basketball team that won the state championship in 1956. Following high school, Bob attended St. John’s University, Collegeville, Minn. He then continued his education at the North American College Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he was awarded a graduate degree in sacred theology. He was also awarded a master’s degree in guidance from Creighton University in Omaha.

Father Brown was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Sioux City on Dec. 18, 1963 at the Church of Christo Rey in Rome. He celebrated his first Mass at Assumption Church in Emmetsburg on July 12, 1964.

Father Brown served in the Sioux City Diocese as a pastor, teacher and administrator. His assignments were: Kuemper High School, Carroll, as faculty from 1964-1969; assistant pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Fonda from 1969-1970; Our Lady of Good Counsel High School, Fonda as faculty from 1969-1970; St. Thomas Parish in Manson, as administrator from 1970-1971; St. Edmond High School, Fort Dodge, as faculty from 1970-1971; Bishop Heelan High School, Sioux City as faculty from 1971-1982; Immaculate Conception Parish, Sioux City as sacramental minister from 1971-1982; Sacred Heart Parish, Sioux City as pastor from 1982-1991; Vicar Forane/Dean of the Southwest Deanery from 1989-1991; Defender of the Bond in the diocesan tribunal from 1983-2011; St. Joseph Parish, Wall Lake, as pastor from 1991-1993; St. Mary High School, Storm Lake, as faculty in 1993; Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, attending St. Francis Parish, Maple River, from 1993-2004, as pastor; St. Lawrence Parish, Carroll, from 2002-2004, as sacramental minister; St. Bernard Parish, Breda, as administrator in 2004; and St. Louis Parish in Royal, as pastor from 2004 until his retirement in 2011.

Father Brown is survived by two sisters-in-law, Helen Brown of Emmetsburg and Mary Brown of Gilbert, Ariz.; several nieces and nephews; as well as other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Joe as a toddler, Dan Brown, John “Jay” Brown and Don Brown and sisters, Mary Ann Linhart and Madeline Goodmanson.
