SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. – A two-day Hispanic charismatic congress will draw hundreds from the tristate area to experience our Lord in a one-on-one manner.
The 13th Annual Hispanic Congress for the Diocese of Sioux City will be held July 29-30 at the Marina Inn Conference Center, South Sioux City. The theme is: A Personal Encounter with Jesus Christ. Bishop Walker Nickless will celebrate the opening Mass at 9 a.m., on July 29.
Humberto Perez of Sioux City, one of the organizers of the event, felt having the focus on one’s personal encounter with Jesus, might compel individuals to be more accountable for their faith life.
“People don’t like to take responsibility for their faith,” he said. “They don’t want to lose time in their day to practice their faith.”
Organizers from Denison, Storm Lake and Sioux City have been meeting since last year’s Hispanic Congress to put together this year’s event. Perez has been associated with the event since its inception.
“I’ve made more friends from different places since being a part of the organization,” he said.
Perez pointed out the local celebration parallels the 50th anniversary of the charismatic renewal. In 1967, there were 25 students from Duquesne University and La Roche College who attended a weekend retreat at The Ark and The Dove Retreat House just outside of Pittsburgh.
The weekend – now called the Duquesne Weekend – is credited as the birth of the Catholic charismatic renewal movement in the United States. The charismatic renewal centers on the “baptism of the Holy Spirit” in which God’s Spirit renews and fills a person with grace.
“Who can explain why the Holy Spirit came upon those young people 50 years ago?” Perez asked. “But it is the same Holy Spirit who is with us here.”
The South Sioux City event will feature two keynote speakers, both from Mexico and Missionaries of Fatima priests, Fathers Heriberto Ruiz Rodriguez and Angel Enrique Olvera Villanueva. Another conference presenter is Father Jeremy Wind, parochial vicar at St. Cecelia Parish, Algona; St. Michael Parish; Whittemore and St. Joseph Parish, Bode.
