10 years ago – 2007

Sioux City – Intended for outdoors, the family retreat at Trinity Heights continued to praise the Lord indoors because of the rain that sporadically poured down on June 3. The Diocese of Sioux City Council of Catholic Women sponsored the retreat, and this was the organization’s first family retreat.

Carroll – Clarence and Laura Wernimont will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on June 16.  A Mass of Thanksgiving will be at 4:30 p.m. at St. Lawrence Church. Immediately following will be a reception at Charlie’s Restaurant.

Marcus – A parishioner from Holy Name Church in Marcus will be leaving home at the end of the summer for two years of service work. Katie Wilberding, a recent graduate of Creighton University, is currently preparing to volunteer in Georgetown Guyana, South America through the Mercy Volunteer Corp International program.

25 years ago – 1992

Schaller – St. Joseph Parish will celebrate its centennial with a 1 p.m. Mass, June 14.  Former pastor, Msgr. Roger J. Augustine of Sioux City, will preach the homily.

Sioux City – Marian Health Center in Sioux City will again off “Operation Heat Relief” to older people in Siouxland who are trying to escape the dangerously high heat during the summer months.

Dedham – St. Joseph Parish of Dedham will observe its 100th anniversary with a weekend of activities June 26-28. The festivities begin with a 6 p.m. Centennial Mass, June 26.

50 years ago – 1967

Sioux City – The Diocese of Sioux City has six new priests following their ordinations Saturday at the Cathedral of the Epiphany.  Bishop Joseph M. Mueller conferred orders on the priests and Auxiliary Bishop Frank Greteman was present in the sanctuary.

Sioux City – Klinger Construction Co. of Sioux City, with a low bid of $405,847, has been awarded the general contract for the construction of the new St. Michael’s Church and rectory in Sioux City.  Construction of the 23,000 square feet of buildings is to begin within a few days.

Manning – A departure ceremony for Father Patrick J. Nooney will be held at Sacred Heart Church. The ceremony will be conducted by Bishop Joseph M. Mueller. Father Nooney will leave next week for Boston where he will join the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle to perform priestly labors in Latin America.
