10 years ago – 2007
Sioux City – CNN journalist Soledad O’Brien to headline 11th Annual Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic education. The 11th Annual Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Education will feature one of the country’s premier journalist.
Sioux City – The 16th Annual Prayer and Celebration Day for Trinity Heights Queen of Peace will be June 24. The event will begin at 3 p.m. with the dedication of the new Moses statue, designed by Dale Lamphere, who also designed several other statues on the Trinity Heights campus including the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Queen of Peace.
West Bend – A 108-year-legacy of Catholic school education in West Bend ended on May 25 when the doors of Sts. Peter and Paul Grade School closed for the final time. With just 25 students, declining enrollment was the main reason for the closure.

25 years ago – 1992
Le Mars – After 28 years at Gehlen Catholic School, a career that began in 1964, Marlene Fitzpatrick, classroom instructor, and later elementary librarian, retires at the end of the 1991-92 school year.
Sioux City – Sioux City auto dealers donated a $12,000, 1992 car, which was raffled at the Friends of Heelan Ball. Over $78,000 was earned, making this year’s ball the most profitable in its 14-year history. The winner of the car, Joseph Mullin, donated it back to Heelan.
Sheldon – Mr. and Mrs. Joe Verschoor of Sheldon, members of St. Patrick Parish, will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on June 6. Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m., followed by a dinner in the parish hall for invited guests and family.
50 years ago – 1967
Sioux City – Commencement exercises for 56 young men and women are being held this afternoon at Briar Cliff College. The Most Rev. Joseph M. Mueller, D.D., honorary chancellor, presided over the ceremonies.
Laurens – Father William J. Ortmann, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, was honored recently at a reception at the parish center marking his 10th year in the priesthood, and his mother, Mrs. Henry Ortmann of Remsen, and two brothers, Joseph and Donald, both of Remsen were there to help celebrate.
Le Mars – Mr. and Mrs. O.M. Kelly will be honored at an open house at Knights of Columbus Hall, in Le Mars, on Sunday, June 4. Hosting the event for the 50th anniversary will be Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kelly family and relative, Mrs. Vincent Freymann and Mrs. Delbert Koopman.
