LE MARS – This year’s 30th anniversary of the Friends of Gehlen Catholic Ball “Generations of Excellence” on April 22, at the Le Mars Convention Center, set another record, raising almost $265,900.
The evening began with a three-course meal prepared by Timmy’s Catering served by Gehlen Catholic’s 7th through 12th graders with the assistance of several Gehlen Catholic parents, faculty, staff, and volunteers.
The top auction bidders of the night included: Name the Gym, Marvin Langel Memorial Gym; $2,500 tuition voucher, Steve and Danna Schuster of Le Mars; Black Hills Cabin, Paul and Lisa Niebuhr of Le Mars and Log Cabin Christian Quilt, Tom and Laurie Kellen of Alton.
This year’s spring raffle winners were Matt and Margaret Wankum of Merrill; Tom and Rose Schlesser of rural LeMars and Kari Jurgensen of Le Mars.
Chair Mark Nuebel ‘96 of Le Mars, explained this year’s anniversary theme, “Generations of Excellence” was evident in the families who have invested so much time, talent and treasure throughout the years.
“It’s because of their commitment and your continuous support, Gehlen Catholic School is what it is today,” he emphasized. “Excellent.”
Gehlen Catholic President, Father Kevin Richter, welcomed this year’s 730-plus attendees at the start of the program.
Stan and Bonnie Meyer of Ireton received the Spirit of Peter and Catherine Gehlen Award. A second Spirit award was presented to Father Richter. He was joined by six of his siblings and their spouses on stage.
Guests were treated to two floors of entertainment. The upper level featured Leonard Brazil (1986 Remsen St. Mary’s graduate). The Johnny Holm Band performed on the lower level.
The Friends of Gehlen Catholic Ball has raised more than $4 million over the past 30 years.
