DECREE FOR BLESSED SACRAMENT AND ST. MICHAEL, SIOUX CITY

Walker

By the Grace of God and the Favor of the Apostolic See

Bishop of Sioux City

The Parish of Saint Michael in Sioux City, Iowa was founded in 1906 by Bishop Garrigan.  The Parish of Blessed Sacrament in Sioux City, Iowa was founded in 1924 by Bishop Heelan.  Over the course of many years, these two parishes have developed a spirit of cooperation, especially in regards to the establishment and maintenance of Holy Cross School.

Consequently, having consulted the diocesan Presbyteral Council, and in accord with the provision of canon 515, 2, of the Code of Canon Law, I hereby decree the suppression of the Parish of Saint Michael in Sioux City, Iowa and the suppression of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Sioux City, Iowa.  I further decree, according to the same canonical prescription, the establishment of the new Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Sioux City, Iowa, effective June 27, 2017.

I further decree that the new Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Sioux City, Iowa, will consist of all territory formerly incorporated into the former Parish of Saint Michael and Blessed Sacrament Parish and that divine worship will take place in the two churches of Saint Michael and Blessed Sacrament.  Also, that the faithful who are registered parishioners of either the former Saint Michael Parish or the former Blessed Sacrament Parish now become parishioners of the new Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Sioux City, Iowa.  I further decree that any monetary funds of the former Saint Michael Parish and the former Blessed Sacrament Parish both in Sioux City, Iowa, previously designated as “restricted”, shall continue to be separately maintained within the new Holy Cross Catholic Parish in Sioux City, Iowa, and used solely for those purposes for which they were created and restricted.

I further decree that, according to the requirements of canon law, those who are directly and principally affected by this decree, that is, those adults who are presently registered as parishioners of the Parish of Saint Michael in Sioux City, Iowa, or Blessed Sacrament Parish in Sioux City, Iowa, shall have the right of recourse against this decree and may lodge an appeal against this decree within thirty (30) continuous days of its publication in The Catholic Globe, official newspaper of the Diocese of Sioux City.

Given in the Central Catholic Offices of the diocese of Sioux City on this 26th day of May, 2017.

Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless
